PDC World Darts Championship in London

England is not only the birthplace of football, but also the home of darts. Traditionally, the PDC World Darts Championship, run by the world’s largest and most important darts organization, takes place in London over the New Year period. Alexandra Palace in London, affectionately known as “Ally Pally” by darts fans, is the mecca of darts. From tomorrow, Thursday, through January 3, 2011, it will host another edition of the showdown between Phil Taylor and the rest of the world. However, Phil “The Power” Taylor, the PDC’s serial world champion, faces strong competition at the World Darts Championship in London—not only from England and Great Britain. Alongside Phil Taylor, James Wade (England), Raymond van Barneveld (Netherlands) and Simon Whitlock (Australia) are among the leading favorites at the Ally Pally.

From a German perspective, reaching the second round would certainly be considered a success for Andree Welge, Bernd Roith and Jyhan Artut. In recent years, the German players’ stay in London has been all too brief. Andree Welge faces No. 9 seed Colin Lloyd in his opening match, although the Bremen player has already beaten him this year. Bernd Roith may have only a slightly easier task in his first appearance at the World Darts Championship at the Ally Pally, where he will face Dennis Priestley, the No. 22 seed. German champion Jyhan Artut won a wildcard for the 2011 PDC World Darts Championship in London. He first has to get past Scott MacKenzie in the preliminary round and could then look forward to a possible match against Denis Ovens, the No. 29 seed.

Darts is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany, thanks in part to live broadcasts of the most important tournaments. At the same time, several major tournaments are now held in Germany, regularly attracting the PDC’s best players. Fans interested in seeing how Andree Welge, Bernd Roith and Jyhan Artut fare at the World Darts Championship in England can follow the action in person at the Ally Pally on a city break in London, or watch the live broadcasts on German television channel Sport 1. Phil Taylor will play his first match tomorrow evening, while Andree Welge will be the first German player to take to the stage on Friday evening.
