Basically anyone can apply to volunteer at the Olympic Games in London, although the organizers would like applicants to meet a few requirements. Applicants must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2012, and must be available to volunteer for at least ten days. Knowledge of foreign languages is also an advantage, while English can be considered a basic requirement. Applications to volunteer at the 2012 Olympics in London are open until and including October 27, 2010, and should be sent directly to the local organizers. Applicants will then be shortlisted before the volunteers are finally selected for their roles at the 2012 Olympics in London following individual interviews, and receive intensive training in the weeks and months leading up to the event.

The duties of volunteers at major sporting events such as the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup are varied and diverse. Depending on individual preferences and/or personal knowledge and skills, possible roles may include interpreting, arranging London hotels or giving directions to the sports venues. Volunteers are, incidentally, a British invention: their services were first used at the 1948 Olympics in London. The 2012 Olympics are definitely worth considering as a special travel tip for London—whether as a volunteer or a fan!
