London in December 2009

In December 2009, London once again invites visitors to enjoy a short break on the banks of the Thames, with plenty of activities to choose from. Events of all kinds tempt holidaymakers to spend Christmas in the glittering city of London or experience an extraordinary New Year’s celebration at the colorful London Eye. There is hardly a better way to welcome the new year than on the Prime Meridian in London. But first, December has plenty of other attractions to offer.

The countdown in London begins as early as December 3. The focus is not on the arrival of 2010, but on Christmas. Traditionally, the lights on the Christmas tree are switched on at Trafalgar Square on December 3. In the cold weather, the tree—given to the British by the Norwegians each year—shines in its festive finery. Choirs also sing a selection of Christmas carols. The atmosphere officially kicks off the festive season leading up to the major holiday at the end of December.

Shopping enthusiasts can make the most of London’s West End from December 7 to 8. Cars are kept away to make room for shopping, and visitors can pick up Christmas gifts with music playing in the background. Traffic returns on Sunday, but the shops remain open, and a family festival delights children in particular with a range of games and activities.

The festive buzz fills London’s streets at least until December 25, reaching its climax on Christmas Day. Until then, visitors can browse Christmas markets, listen to seasonal music, try their hand at ice skating, or pick up the last of their Christmas gifts from London’s wide range of shops.

After Christmas, the next big highlight is an extended New Year’s Eve celebration in London. The city’s many New Year’s Eve offerings are almost overwhelming. Whatever your personal preferences, you are sure to find a way to welcome the new year. From clubs and bars to major public celebrations, London has plenty of ways to start the year in style. For many events, however, it is important to get tickets in good time.
