London withdraws from bidding for 2015 World Athletics Championships

Surprising news from the world of international sport: London, England’s capital, has withdrawn its bid to host the 2015 World Athletics Championships. The decision was announced by British Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson at a press conference in London. Robertson was vague about the exact reasons for London’s withdrawal, leaving room for speculation.

London: Will it now bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships?

Following London’s withdrawal of its bid to host the 2015 World Athletics Championships, it now seems highly likely that the championships will be held in Beijing, the Chinese capital, the only remaining bidder for the 2015 event. The host city of the 2008 Olympics is well equipped to stage the World Athletics Championships, thanks to its modern facilities, infrastructure, hotels and sports venues. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced that it would decide the host city for the 2015 World Athletics Championships later this month. As British Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson mentioned when the bid was withdrawn, London intends to submit a replacement bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

Since the Olympic Games are due to take place in London in just under a year and a half, the British may have considered the interval before 2015 too short to host another major event. England is also hoping to host either the European Football Championship or even the FIFA World Cup in the coming years. From this perspective, withdrawing from the bid to host the 2015 World Athletics Championships makes sense. The next World Athletics Championships will be held in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011.
