240,000 volunteer applications for the 2012 Olympics
London is gearing up for the Olympics: The 2012 Olympic Games are currently the main topic in England’s capital. The city is right on schedule: preparations for construction projects (infrastructure, stadiums and hotels in London) are in full swing. But excitement about the next Summer Olympics is growing not only in London—the rest of the world is looking forward to the 2012 Olympics too. There is also news on the volunteer front: LOCOG, the London Organising Committee, has received more than 240,000 applications from around the world for volunteer positions at the 2012 Olympics and the Paralympics that follow—an impressive figure and proof that the Olympic Games have lost none of their fascination or appeal.
Olympics 2012: Many helping hands are ready to contribute to the success of the Games in London
Sebastian Coe, chair of the organising committee for the 2012 Games, said he was overwhelmed and impressed by the large number of applicants for Olympic volunteer positions, and thanked them for their many applications. At the same time, he asked applicants to be patient. Starting in February next year, the organising committee will take a year to carefully select candidates from the applications. It will then announce who can become part of the Olympic family as a volunteer and help make the 2012 Summer Olympics in London a success.

In just under a year and a half, the Olympic flame will be lit during the opening ceremony in London, marking the start of the 2012 Olympic Games. The world will then turn its attention to London—and come to the city too, because during the 2012 Summer Olympics, hotels, holiday apartments and holiday homes in London will be fully booked by visitors from around the world.
