Michael Jackson memorial unveiled at London’s Lyric Theatre

Michael Jackson was unquestionably one of the biggest stars of his time and had been due to launch one of the greatest comebacks in history in July 2009. Several Michael Jackson concerts were planned as part of the tour, including in London, and they would have drawn fans from all over the world to the British capital. But things turned out differently. On 25 June 2009, one of the world’s most famous hearts stopped beating forever: Michael Jackson died in Los Angeles at the age of 50. Even a year after the tragic event, the cause of the superstar’s sudden death has not been fully established. An overdose of an anaesthetic administered to Michael Jackson by his personal physician is suspected; in February 2010, the doctor was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

On the eve of the first anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, a memorial to the “King of Pop” was unveiled outside London’s Lyric Theatre. The Lyric Theatre is in the West End, near Piccadilly Circus, one of the best-known sights in London, and it was no coincidence that the theatre was chosen as the site for the memorial. A year earlier, the Lyric Theatre in London had already become a place of pilgrimage for fans after news of the “King of Pop’s” death spread around the world. The musical “Thriller Live,” dedicated to Michael Jackson and his extraordinary career, has been running at London’s Lyric Theatre since early 2009. Thriller was one of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits.

The ceremony at London’s Lyric Theatre to mark the unveiling of the Michael Jackson memorial featured several dance performances by the group Diversity. Diversity won the British talent show “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2009 and was due to accompany Michael Jackson on his concerts, but sadly, the well-known circumstances meant this never came to pass. London’s venerable Lyric Theatre, which first opened in 1888, is traditionally a venue for musicals in particular. It is not yet known how much longer the musical “Thriller Live” will be showing in London.
