One thing was clear as soon as the premiere was over: “Love Never Dies” is sure to be a commercial success. Advance ticket sales alone brought in around 10 million euros. The new musical is being staged in London’s West End, not far from Her Majesty’s Theatre, where “The Phantom of the Opera” has been running since 1986. With more than 100 million viewers worldwide, it is the most successful musical of all time. So the new musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber has some very big shoes to fill in London. The story: “Love Never Dies” takes place a decade after the events of “The Phantom of the Opera,” at the beginning of the 20th century. The setting is no longer Paris, but the coast of New York. At the entertainment park Coney Island, the Phantom (played, as in “The Phantom of the Opera,” by Ramin Karimloo) runs a show featuring unusual acts.
The Phantom lures Christine to New York. She had fallen for him in the previous musical and has become a famous opera singer over the past ten years. She answers his call—but brings her husband Raoul, another familiar face from the original musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.”
For musical fans, seeing “Lover Never Dies” in London, the new musical by “The Phantom of the Opera” creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, is a must. Demand for tickets is enormous, so you should arrange your tickets and a hotel in London well in advance.
