London with Children

Taking children to London, Paris or Rome—around 15 years ago, people would have thrown up their hands and imagined financial ruin and children whining. But nowadays, a trip to London with children is practically a must rather than a luxury.

The only drawback one might still find with London as a family destination is its hotels. Almost none are equipped with children in mind. There are, of course, a few exceptions among London hotels, such as the Clarendon Hotel. A very simple alternative for a family holiday in London is to stay in a holiday apartment or house. Many of these holiday rentals and hotels in London are even right in the heart of the city. But even if you choose a hotel on the outskirts of the Big City, families can still save money. The London Card, Travelcard or Oyster Card can help families make substantial savings. Children under five also travel free on London transport, while older children travel free when accompanying an adult with the cards mentioned above.

The reasons to visit London with children can be found in a thousand places and attractions, London sights and hundreds more events, workshops and fun activities. Children are welcome at London attractions too, and sometimes get in free. Children see the world through their own eyes. To them, London is rarely a big city, but a voyage of discovery into another world. Seen through their eyes, for instance, the courtyard at Somerset House, with its 55 fountain-like jets, can become a wonderful playground. The 12,000 animals at London Zoo speak their own language, while at the Cartoon Museum, dedicated to animation and comic art, even adults can become children again. Events and workshops at the National Portrait Gallery and Horniman Museum, designed for children, are always exciting and give parents time to explore London on their own. And nothing compares with a Harry Potter-themed adventure through London with children, following in his footsteps. It begins at King’s Cross station on Platform 8 (by the actual Platform 9¾) and ends somewhere between Diagon Alley (the Leadenhall Market shopping arcade) and the Ministry of Magic (the government buildings in Whitehall).

By the way, when dining out in London, some restaurants occasionally list free meals for children under “special dishes” on their menus. And, of course, you can go shopping in London with children. Popular destinations include Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop, Mystical Faires and the designer children’s clothing at Selfridges. Eating and drinking in London
