From Londinium to the modern City
The Romans founded Londinium in the 1st century. Over the centuries, London developed into an important centre of trade and administration. Fires, epidemics and wars shaped the city, alongside growth and rebuilding. Today, historic sites stand alongside financial institutions and modern architecture.
The City is a great starting point for a historical walking tour that takes in Roman sites, old churches and well-known landmarks. For more places to visit, see the sightseeing overview.
